PB&J hosted the after party for Gloria Steinem and Dorothy Pitman Hughes after they spoke at UNF on March 10th. People came together to make a difference in our community by supporting sustainability, community gardens, economic empowerment, live jazz, and two pioneers in the social justice movement.
Gloria Steinem and Dorothy Pitman Hughes, lifelong women’s and civil rights activists, reunited to discuss the “state of the union” regarding women’s access to equal opportunities. Audience participation infused the night with lively discourse about today’s issues and the steps that women and men can take to achieve economic and social autonomy.
All who attended left with a call to action to help lift those for whom real opportunity is out of reach and tangible tools to build powerful partnerships in our community.
Dorothy Pitman Hughes plans on creating a community garden on two plots of land she acquired on Moncrief Road on the Northside. The land will serve as a place where community members can grow their own food and purchase fresh produce at discounted rates in hopes of improving nutrition and food quality in the area, as well as bringing hope, pride and encouragement to the community.
